| January 27, 1999 was declared National Mashed Potato Sculpting
Day by Angela Grau and Jenni Ross (Hammon's Hall R.As). So the first event
was a contest and live performance in the basement of the Hammon's Hall residence on the
campus of SMSU, in Springfield, Missouri.. Artist and Potatophile Jeffrey Allen
Price was asked to be the so-called "Potato Expert" and create a Mashed
Potato Sculpture of his own, as well as judge the Potato Contest.
Price enthusiastically participated and created POTATOLISK, a
30" obelisk covered in 40 pounds of Mashed Potatoes with the skins left on. The
other Potato Sculptors created a menagerie of enjoyment, including Potato
Gumby and the solemn Potato Angel. The 1st
Place winners, Alan Ware and Lloyd Rainge, took
honors with their Woman on the Beach. |
